Day Twenty-Four: Today was a pretty easy day. Students in 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 7th worked on myheroproject.org. In 2nd period we read aloud and students got to read their own books. I like this part too because I get to read my book. I'm instilling a desire to read for pleasure. During planning Molly and I looked at my online classes and figured out citizenship grades for quarter three.
Day Twenty-Five: During Student Access we went to the library so that kids could work on myheroproject.org. Once again 1st, 3rd, 6th, and 7th periods worked on myheroproject.org and once they were finished they got to work on other homework. Molly and I tried to grade the paragraphs as they came in. In 2nd we read aloud and then reviewed subject and predicate so that at some point we can play a sentence making game. We had team planning for 4th and 5th.
Day Twenty-Six: The Faculty Meeting in the morning started with a TED talk video. http://www.ted.com/talks/shawn_achor_the_happy_secret_to_better_work.html In this talk I liked the part where Shawn Achor talked about writing 3 gratitude a day, keeping a journal, exercise, meditate, and random acts of kindness. During Advisory we had a Piano Assembly for 45 minutes. Alpin Hong came to the school; performing and teaching the kids about the elements of piano and songs. Just look him up on youtube. He is really talented and entertained a room full of middle schoolers (about 250)! Since we had this assembly, today and Thursday's classes were switched. So today in 2nd period we read aloud, tested RCBM & MAZE, read books, and then started a word choice activity. I gave students a pile of supplies and they had to pick only six items to build something with. In groups of three one person was the builder, one person was the scribe, and the other person was the re-creator. We only got through one rotation but it went well. In study hall students came to the library to boost their grades. It was kind of crazy because so many students came in and they all wanted attention. In 4th Molly and I did a lot of grading! For 6th period the kids are beginning the process of picking heroes. First they filled out a Frame of Reference on the word Hero. Then they filled out a template to answer questions about Where Can I Find a Hero? After this we had an activity to get the kids out of their seats called Stir the Class on. Next students who were not finished with myheroproject.org paragraphs went to the library with me and the rest of the students stayed in the classroom with Molly to work on writing paragraphs on their top three heroes.
Day Twenty-Seven: I went to a TCAP training meeting this morning. For 1st, 3rd, and 7th the same activities were used from 6th period yesterday. I taught 3rd and 7th. Wow, 7th had so many questions about the requirements of future assignments that we hadn't given out yet. It was kind of frustrating. Students came in during Study Hall to boost their grade and work on myheroproject.org. In 5th period planning we came up with a system for a couple students who need assistance with their attitudes both emotional and physical. A yellow card means slow down and fill out the reflection form. A red card means go to the office for ten minutes and fill out the refocus form and work on class work. And a purple card means an office referral. We are hoping that the kids don't get to the purple card.
